Leading Change
Dave Srulowitz &
Randal L. Surratt
President and Chief Executive Officer of PMOLink, Inc.
Dave Srulowitz started with a short summary of the book, "Leading Change," by John P. Kotter, a Professor Emeritus of the Harvard Business School and frequent business and management speaker at CEO conferences. This book provides the background for why businesses need to implement process improvement initiatives and why many businesses fail when they try to do so. It provides you with an 8-step process for your successful implementation, complete with the various behaviors one is apt to see along the way and how to deal with them.
Then, Randy who operates a business that practices Professor Kotter's principles shared his experiences and thoughts about how well these principles work as well as a few "war stories."

Critical Aspects of Successful Outsourced I/T Performance Management
Joe Hessmiller
Director, CAI-Texas
Outsourcing…a strategy that all progressive organizations need to understand. And, to take advantage of it, need to understand how to manage it well.
CAI has successfully executed dozens of large-scale applications outsourcing engagements with clients in the US, Canada, and Europe. CAI engagements have routinely produced double-digit percentage improvements in throughput and quality.
The CIO of Highmark BlueCross noted, “By focusing on the processes and metrics of CAI’s methodology and tools, Highmark was able to reduce the cost of the IT function and implement a service excellence model that has resulted in improved IT effectiveness, increased accountability and enhanced business alignment.”
Joe will be presenting findings from two recent IEEE papers on outsourcing effectiveness and relating the findings to the “reality” of outsourcing as CAI has experienced it. Many critical insights will be presented in this session. This is a “must attend” session for any organization seriously considering – or re-considering – outsourcing services.

Why Measure? Techniques for Getting at the Rationale
Dr. Joyce Statz
Most organizations measure something about the way they do their work – some more, some less than others. Some use the measures for decision-making, some collect data for no apparent reason. To avoid wasting time and effort just measuring what can be measured, the wise team member asks “Why?”
That “Why?” needs to be asked in a way that the listener can understand, though, or it might lead to unintended consequences of apparent insubordination! In this session, we examine and experiment with several techniques you can use to ask “Why?” in a politically acceptable way. Leveraging basics of Practical Software and Systems Measurement (PSM), strategy maps and the Balanced Scorecard, and several Six Sigma tools, we discuss how to avoid the failure described in real examples from prior experience. Then we work through an extended example of how a Level 4-seeking organization would use its processes and its measurement of process capability to help solve a business problem.
